The Seven Swans Fairy Tale Diptych
I’m the eldest of three.  That doesn’t bode well in terms of fairy-tale rules, a topic explored nicely in Diana Wynne Jones’ Howl’s Moving Castle (one of my all-time fave books.)  This picture has nothing to do with Jones or Howl or even Sophie, but it is a fairy tale that means a lot to me.  There’s problematic drek in it, but I understand why the main character would fight so hard and sacrifice so much for her brothers.  The story is ‘The Seven Swans,’ and I keep running into other people who feel the same connection to it that I do.  They are almost always big brothers and sisters.  Take that, fairy tales!  We aren’t just monsters of primogeniture that have to fail at life to let our siblings get a chance to prove how pure and great they are.  Sometimes we can actually help them instead ^^
